Kilmarnock ended a 12-year wait for a win at Easter Road with a vital 1-0 victory over Hibernian on Tuesday. George Stanger's goal five minutes before half-time secured the three points, moving the Ayrshire side off the bottom of the Scottish Premiership table.
The win is Kilmarnock's first in the league this season and lifts them to 12th place with four points from six games. It provides a significant boost after the disappointment of losing a Premier Sports Cup semi-final to Aberdeen in a penalty shoot-out the previous weekend.
Neil McCann's side showed resilience throughout, defending their lead after being reduced to ten men in injury time when Djenairo Daniels received a second yellow card. Goalkeeper Rafa Sallinger made several important saves to preserve the clean sheet, while a Joe Hugill effort was ruled out for offside.
McCann praised his team's unity and counter-attacking threat after the match. "We stood up to that and still had that threat ourselves we turned into a really good counter-attacking team," the Kilmarnock manager said.
Hibernian boss David Gray acknowledged his side's struggles, with fans growing frustrated. "The fans are frustrated because we’re not achieving what we need to be at this stage and winning enough games consistently," Gray said.
The result is a landmark one for Killie, who had not won a league game at the Leith ground since 2014.
Kilmarnock now prepare for their next match at home to Falkirk on 30 December. Robbie Deas remains sidelined through injury.
