Kilmarnock Manager Neil McCann in Frame for Scotland Job
Kilmarnock manager Neil McCann is likely to be seriously considered to become the new Scotland manager in the coming months, according to former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness.
What happened?
Wyness believes that the 51-year-old may have a realistic chance of landing the national team job, with the SFA expected to lean towards a younger homegrown coach. The former boardroom man also noted Steven Naismith as a likely candidate for the role, given that he had been part of Steve Clarke's coaching staff since August 2025.
Why it matters for Kilmarnock
Both McCann and Naismith are former Rangers stars, and could yet be about to lead their country in the top national manager's job. Wyness believes that Scotland are preparing for a five to 10-year plan to rebuild themselves.
What comes next?
The SFA are likely to target a "technician" to step into the dugout after Clarke's departure, which followed a group stage exit at the World Cup. Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness emphasised that both McCann and Naismith are likely to genuinely be in the frame.
Kilmarnock are currently 11th in the Premiership, with 28 points from 33 games, and are on a 5-game winning run. They have scored 37 goals and conceded 65, with a -28 goal difference. They are 42 points behind leaders Heart Of Midlothian and have a next fixture against them at home on September 19.
Kilmarnock's current form
Kilmarnock's recent form has been impressive, with 5 wins and 0 losses in their last 5 games. They have been on a 5-game winning run, with their most recent result being a 4-1 win over Livingston on May 17.
Neil McCann's chances
Wyness believes that McCann has a realistic chance of landing the national team job, citing his experience and ability to work with young players. He also noted that McCann's style of play is well-suited to the Scottish game, and that he would be a popular choice among fans.
What's next for Kilmarnock?
Kilmarnock's next fixture is against Heart Of Midlothian at home on September 19. They will be looking to continue their winning form and move up the table. With McCann's chances of becoming the Scotland manager increasing, it will be interesting to see how this affects the team's performance.
