Kilmarnock secured a narrow 1-0 win over Hamilton Academical in the League Cup group stage on Wednesday night, extending their unbeaten start to the season.

The Rugby Park side, playing their home games at Auchinleck Talbot's Beechwood Park while their new pitch is laid, needed a second-half strike from captain Greg Kiltie to break the deadlock after a goalless first half. Kiltie picked his spot from a corner to give Neil McCann's team the lead, and Kilmarnock held firm to see out the win.

With Raith Rovers beating Peterhead 1-0 earlier in the evening, Killie sit second in Group H on goal difference behind the Fife side. A win at Aberdeen on Saturday would clinch top spot in the section and send McCann’s men into the last 16.

What happened at Beechwood Park?

After a cagey opening 45 minutes, Kilmarnock broke the deadlock when Greg Kiltie finished coolly from a corner in the 52nd minute. The visitors pushed hard for an equaliser but Darian McKinnon’s side couldn’t find a way through a resolute Killie defence.

McCann’s men, who are without a home ground until their new pitch is ready, soaked up pressure late on to preserve all three points. The win keeps them unbeaten in all competitions this season after their recent Livingston thrashing.

Why it matters for Kilmarnock

The League Cup run gives Kilmarnock a chance to test their squad depth before the Premiership resumes. With a thin squad and a temporary home, every point counts - and Wednesday’s narrow win keeps their options open in Group H.

Killie sit 11th in the Premiership with 28 points from 33 games, four points clear of relegation but 42 adrift of Hearts at the top. Their recent form reads WWWWL, while their next fixture is a home clash with Hearts on 19 September.

What comes next for Neil McCann’s side?

A trip to Aberdeen on Saturday offers a chance to top Group H. A draw would still hand Killie a place in the last 16, but McCann will want maximum points to ease the pressure on his squad.

The win over Hamilton follows Killie’s 4-1 demolition of Livingston in May, a result that briefly lifted them to a five-game winning streak. With just one loss in their last five, the East Ayrshire side are pushing for a late push up the Premiership table.
