Kilmarnock Football Club has called Rugby Park its home for almost 150 years, but there have been proposals to abandon the stadium and move to a new location. In the early 1990s, a plan was floated to build a new stadium on the Scott Ellis playing fields on Queen's Drive, but the plans were met with opposition from local authorities and fans. The idea of moving to a new stadium was first proposed in 1988 by Largs businessman Hugh Scott, who attempted to buy the club. Speaking to the Killie Club in October of that year, he said the incumbent board had already made an approach to a development company about selling the stadium, with Queen's Drive a possible option for a new home. The Kilmarnock Standard outlined some of the issues with the proposal in its season preview for the following year, stating that the money required to maintain Rugby Park was immense and that the lack of success on the football front over the years had led to a reduction in the amount of money that comes through the turnstiles. The idea of selling off the 11-acre site and moving outside the town, possibly to Queen's Drive, was floated on several occasions, but there were many who would be opposed to this idea, preferring to remain in a stadium with a capacity of just over 17,500 that rarely attracts more than a few thousand fans. The plans for a new stadium were eventually abandoned, and Kilmarnock has continued to play at Rugby Park.
